In the dental office, the placement of a topical fluoride treatment generally begins at age 3. The fluoride may be in the form of a gel, foam or varnish. Typically, it is applied with a cotton swab or brush, or for patients with braces, it is used as a rinse. It can also be placed in a tray with fluoride foam that is held in the mouth for several minutes.
